Talkov kamen Lake, lake in Russia
Talkov kamen Lake is a lake in Sysertsky District, Russia, formed inside an old quarry and surrounded on all sides by tall rock walls. The site is part of a protected area and sits within the forested landscape of the Ural region.
The site was once a working talc mine operating in this part of the Urals during the 19th century. When extraction stopped, the pit gradually filled with groundwater and became the lake seen today.
The lake sits in the hollow of a former talc quarry, which is exactly what its name means in Russian. Visitors walking along the rim can still see the cut rock faces left behind by the mining work.
The lake is reached on foot through forest trails, so sturdy footwear is a good idea for the walk in. As a protected area, visitors should look up any access rules before heading out, since conditions may change by season.
The water in this former quarry is unusually clear because it is fed entirely by underground springs rather than by surface runoff. This makes the lake look noticeably different when viewed from the top of the surrounding rock walls.
