The building was completed in 1905 and originally housed Russia's first Kodak office along with various shops on the ground floor. Over the decades it became an established residential landmark that maintained its original character.

The building's residents over decades have shaped its character as a working apartment house rather than a museum piece. People continue to live and move through its corridors, maintaining the lived-in quality that makes it feel connected to daily Saint Petersburg life.
