Evangelical Lutheran Church of Saint Mary, Lutheran church in central Saint Petersburg, Russia
The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Saint Mary is a church in central Saint Petersburg with classical design, a dome on a high drum, and a facade with four Tuscan columns. Inside, an impressive pipe organ fills the space and defines the sacred atmosphere.
The church was founded in 1734 when Empress Anna Ioannovna granted land on Bolshaya Konyushennaya Street for a wooden chapel. Over time, the wooden structure gave way to a stone building that developed into the classical house of worship seen today.
The congregation gathers for classical music concerts and religious education programs that shape the life of the parish community. Visitors can sense how singing and music traditions remain central to how people experience this place.
Services are held in Finnish and Russian, so visitors should plan accordingly if they wish to attend a service. The church hosts regular music performances where you can experience the full sound of the organ.
The interior houses a baroque pipe organ with nearly 1,500 pipes installed by the Finnish company Martti Porthan in 2010. This modern instrument was built using historical principles to authentically recreate the sound of an earlier era.
