Stora Helvetet, Railway bridge in Åre Municipality, Sweden
Stora Helvetet is a railway bridge spanning 240 meters across a deep ravine using steel box sections. It carries trains between Sweden and Norway as part of the Mittbanan line near the border region.
The railway line first crossed the ravine in 1877 as part of establishing the connection between Sweden and Norway. A complete reconstruction took place between 2016 and 2018, replacing the original structure with new steel box sections.
The name Stora Helvetet reflects the harsh conditions railway workers endured during the construction of the original structure in the mountainous Swedish terrain.
The bridge is part of an active railway line and cannot be crossed on foot. The best views come from surrounding valleys or nearby roads where trains can be observed passing overhead.
A single steel box segment weighing 700 tons had to be carefully lifted into place during the reconstruction. This massive installation challenge highlights the engineering complexity of renewing critical infrastructure in remote mountainous terrain.
