Eriksbergs bockkran, Industrial gantry crane in Eriksberg district, Gothenburg, Sweden.
Eriksbergs bockkran is a large industrial gantry crane with a red metallic structure standing next to the Göta Älv river where the former Eriksberg shipyard once operated. The crane remains in its original location, marking where ships were once built and assembled.
The crane was built in 1968 by NOHAB in Trollhättan and transported down the Göta Älv river by barge in 1969 to the Eriksberg shipyard. It then served shipbuilding operations at one of Sweden's major construction centers for many years.
The crane shows how Gothenburg moved from being a major shipbuilding center to a modern place where people live and work. You can see this change reflected in the industrial structure that now stands among residential buildings.
The crane can be viewed from outside and photographed from the riverbank or nearby paths throughout the day. The area is easy to reach on foot, though it sits among residential and business buildings so visiting during daylight hours is recommended.
This is the only complete gantry crane structure of its kind preserved in Sweden, as similar structures from other shipyards have been removed or relocated. Its survival makes it a rare reminder of Swedish industrial heritage.
