Kalecik Barajı, Elazığ, Water dam in Elazig, Turkey.
Kalecik Barajı is a water dam in eastern Turkey built across a mountain stream to create a reservoir for the local region. The structure holds back water that forms a long, narrow lake surrounded by rocky hillsides and dry terrain.
The dam was built in the 1970s to improve water management in this eastern region of Turkey. This project was part of a wider effort to better use water resources for farming and local needs.
The dam transformed local farming practices by introducing controlled irrigation systems to the agricultural communities of the Karakocan district.
The location sits in a mountainous area and is best explored on foot or by car since there are few paved paths around it. The best time to visit is spring or fall when temperatures are more comfortable for walking.
The dam's earth-fill structure contains 680,000 cubic meters of material, engineered specifically for the geographic conditions of the Kalecik Stream valley.
