Dongshan Shito Gong Temple, Buddhist temple in Yilan City, Taiwan
Dongshan Shito Gong Temple is a Taoist temple located in Yilan City, in the northeastern part of Taiwan. The building follows the traditional style common to Taiwanese temples, with a layered roof decorated with dragon and phoenix figures, red columns, and detailed stone and wood carvings throughout the halls.
The temple was founded to honor Shito Gong, a deity venerated in the Yilan region for centuries. As the local community grew, the temple expanded and took on a more central role in organizing religious ceremonies and community gatherings.
Locals visit the temple throughout the day to light incense and offer prayers at the various shrines inside. The space feels active and lived-in rather than ceremonial, which gives visitors a real sense of how spiritual practice fits into daily life here.
The temple is generally open throughout the day and welcomes visitors without restrictions. Arriving early in the morning gives you a calmer experience, as the space tends to fill up during lunar festival days.
Shito Gong is an earth deity associated with the protection of land and homes in Chinese folk religion, not a Buddhist figure as the temple name might suggest to outsiders. This type of deity is found across Taiwan but often receives less attention than more widely recognized gods.
