Robert Y Dinosaur Museum is an archaeological museum in Xincheng Village, Yilan County, Taiwan, centered on a nearly complete Tyrannosaurus Rex fossil. The building is divided into themed sections displaying fossils, minerals, and hands-on activities suited for families.
The museum was built on the site of a former frozen food factory that had stood empty for years. Turning an abandoned industrial site into a place for education and family visits changed how the local community used that space.
Visitors can take part in a fossil dig activity on site, brushing and uncovering specimens from sand just as field researchers do. This hands-on format turns a museum visit into something children and adults remember long after leaving.
The museum sits close to a highway interchange, making it easy to reach by car for a family day out. Anyone joining the dig activity should wear clothes that can get dirty, as the experience involves working in sand.
The building itself was constructed using timber salvaged from 40 old shipwrecks, so the walls carry traces of seafaring history. Look closely at the wood structure and you can spot the varied grains and textures of timber pulled from different vessels.
