Nanfang'ao, Fishing port in Suao, Taiwan
Nanfang'ao is a major fishing port on Taiwan's eastern coast with a distinctive landform shaped by a small island that caused sand to accumulate. The location offers excellent fishing conditions, with cliffs, reefs, and natural fish grounds nearby.
The port formed through natural processes when a small island acted as a barrier, trapping sand where wind and waves could not reach. Over time, this created the coastal formation that exists today.
The port supplies most of Taiwan's mackerel catch, especially during the season from September through February. The fishing families and their work shape daily life here and give the place its character.
Visitors can reach the port via National Highway 5 with the Suao exit, or by train to Suao Station with bus connections from there. The area is fairly easy to navigate once you arrive.
Three sand dunes form a natural formation that locals named Pen Holder Mountain for its distinctive saddle-shaped outline. This unusual landform is a reminder of how nature creates unexpected shapes along the coast.
