Memorial complex of the Heroes of Ukraine, Memorial monument in Lviv, Ukraine.
The memorial complex centers on a tall stone pillar bearing the names and portraits of 107 fallen heroes, set within a landscaped site with walking paths and viewing areas. The installation spans nearly 1 hectare and allows visitors to look out over the city from different vantage points.
Completed in 2019, this was Ukraine's first memorial specifically honoring those killed during the 2014 Revolution of Dignity. Its creation responded to the need for a national monument dedicated to this defining national moment.
The steel framework echoes the barricade design from the Maidan events, creating a physical connection to this turning point in Ukrainian history. Walking through the space, you sense how the memorial shapes the way people remember these moments.
The site is accessible on foot from the city center and features wide pathways connecting all sections of the complex. Multiple vantage points are positioned to offer views regardless of weather conditions or time of year.
The design received the First National Prize in Landscape Architecture, earning recognition for its innovative approach to public space. This award highlights how memorials can function as thoughtfully designed places where visitors naturally gather and reflect.
