Botanical garden of Lviv University, Historical botanical garden at Ivan Franko National University, Lviv, Ukraine.
The Botanical Garden of Lviv University is a plant collection on the grounds of Ivan Franko National University with two separate locations that together cover about 18.5 hectares. The sites contain mature trees, flowering plants, and experimental areas dedicated to plant research.
A professor named Hiacynt Łobarzewski founded the garden in 1852 on the grounds of a former Trinitarian monastery, with Karl Bauer designing the initial layout. These early beginnings shaped the basic structure that still forms the foundation of the place today.
The garden has been linked to the university since its founding and continues to serve as a place where students learn about plants and nature. Visitors can see how the different planted areas help people understand local plant life and its characteristics.
The garden is open for visits from May through October, offering good insight into the local plant collections. Guided tours take place regularly, so visitors can expect explanations from expert staff members.
Growing in the garden is one of the city's oldest trees, a yew tree about 300 years old that has stood there since the garden was established. The collection also includes more than 135 different types of rhododendrons, which is a gathering of plants rarely seen together in one place.
