Forest park "Pohulianka", Protected forest park in eastern Lviv, Ukraine
Forest park Pohulianka is a protected natural area in eastern Lviv, stretching across a large area bounded by several streets and dominated by mature beech and hornbeam trees. The grounds contain multiple walking trails that wind through these established forests, offering visitors different routes to explore.
In the early 1800s, attorney Franz Węgliński purchased the land and transformed it into a recreational estate that quickly became a favored destination for city residents. The site was later protected to preserve the natural forest and its historical features from future development.
The name Pohulianka comes from the Ukrainian word for leisure or enjoyment, reflecting its original purpose as a gathering place for recreation in the city. Visitors can still walk the same paths that were enjoyed by Lviv residents seeking a break from urban life.
The park is easily accessible by public transportation and visitors should wear comfortable shoes for walking the forest trails. The best time to visit is during daylight hours, particularly in warmer months when the paths are dry and conditions are pleasant.
The park preserves a historic water intake system called Prybylo from 1839, decorated with mermaid carvings that visitors can still see today. This structure stands as a curious example of 19th-century engineering and adds an unexpected artistic touch to the forest landscape.
