Medowa Cave, Natural cave in eastern Lviv, Ukraine
Medowa Cave is a limestone cave system in eastern Lviv with two main chambers connected by a narrow passage. The system spans 56 meters in total length with passages that reach considerable heights and widths throughout.
The cave was carved out by local miners during limestone extraction in the 19th century. This mining activity created the passage and chamber system that visitors explore today.
The name comes from the yellowish limestone walls that resemble honey color, known as Medova in Ukrainian. You can see this warm tint clearly as you move through the chambers.
Bring a flashlight to navigate through the chambers, as artificial light is necessary for safe passage. Access to the second room requires moving through a narrow tunnel, so physical agility is helpful.
The cave system is home to nine bat species, including the greater mouse-eared bat and brown long-eared bat. These species use the cave as a natural shelter and winter refuge.
