Lviv Oblast, Administrative division in western Ukraine
Lviv Oblast is an administrative division in the western part of Ukraine, made up of seven districts. This area organizes public services and local governance for a large territory between the Carpathian foothills and the central Ukrainian plain.
The current administrative structure was established in December 1939 when formerly Polish territories came under Soviet control. Later this territorial division remained in place after Ukrainian independence and was reformed in 2020 to create larger districts.
The region maintains strong Ukrainian traditions with numerous churches, monasteries, and castles that represent centuries of architectural development from different ruling periods.
Travelers usually do not notice administrative boundaries since the districts flow into one another without physical barriers. Most road signs show only place names and do not directly indicate district changes.
The 2020 reform reduced the number of districts from nineteen to seven, simplifying local administration. Many older maps still show the previous layout with more smaller districts.
