Tarnica

Tarnica is a mountain summit in the Bieszczady Mountains that rises to 1346 meters with two distinct peaks. The southern face drops steeply in a rocky wall that stands out dramatically in the mountain landscape.

The mountain served as a natural boundary between different regions of the Carpathian range throughout Polish history. This geographic position made it an important landmark for defining territorial limits across generations.

On Good Friday, thousands of Catholic pilgrims walk up to the summit cross at Tarnica as part of their religious celebration. This yearly journey connects local faith practices with the mountain landscape and draws visitors from across the region.

The main hiking route starts from Wołosate village and reaches the summit directly, with alternative paths available from Ustrzyki Górne via Halicz peak. Weather can change rapidly at this elevation, so bring layers and prepare for steep sections along the way.

The Bieg Rzeźnika is an annual ultramarathon race that takes runners across 80 kilometers through this mountain region. This extreme endurance event draws athletes from around the world who tackle the Bieszczady mountains as the ultimate physical test.
