Rozsypaniec, Mountain summit in Bieszczady National Park, Poland
Rozsypaniec is a mountain summit in Bieszczady National Park in southeastern Poland, sitting at the park's southeastern boundary. The slopes are open grasslands dotted with loose rocks and boulders, with no forest cover on the upper parts of the mountain.
Rozsypaniec is part of the Carpathian ridge that has served for centuries as a natural boundary between regions and later between states. The area around the mountain was historically sparsely settled and changed hands several times between neighboring powers across the centuries.
The name Rozsypaniec comes from a Polish word meaning something scattered or spread in pieces, which matches the look of the slopes covered in loose rocks. Walkers notice these stone clusters appearing among the grasses as they climb toward the top.
The trail to the top follows marked paths through open meadows and rocky ground, so sturdy footwear and a moderate level of fitness are helpful. The upper section can be slippery after rain, so checking the weather before heading out is a good idea.
The summit sits on a European watershed, meaning rainwater falling on one side of the ridge eventually drains toward the Baltic Sea, while water on the other side flows toward the Black Sea. A single step at the top can put you on the border between two entirely different drainage systems.
