The monument commemorates the Bakhmut Flying Club that operated from 1938 to 1941 and trained military pilots for service in World War II.
The MiG-17 installation represents Ukrainian aviation heritage and became a symbol of resistance during the 2022-2023 military operations in Bakhmut.
The monument location serves as a reference point for navigation through the southern district of Bakhmut near the road leading to Chasiv Yar.
In March 2023, Russian forces destroyed this landmark during intense combat operations, following the Ukrainian military withdrawal across the Zabakhmutka river.
