Brookside Gardens is a botanical garden in Wheaton, Maryland, covering about fifty acres with several themed areas. The grounds are divided into sections such as the Aquatic Garden, Butterfly Garden, Rose Garden, and other designed spaces.
Montgomery County established the center in the mid-1960s and opened it to the public a few years later. The official dedication took place in summer 1969.
The name was chosen in reference to the brook that flows through the surroundings. Visitors can explore design elements in the Japanese Garden that create especially powerful accents during blooming season.
Entry is free and the grounds can be visited during daylight hours. The visitor center is open during the day and provides access to information and facilities.
Two greenhouses display plant collections from tropical and subtropical zones throughout the year. These covered areas maintain constant temperature and humidity to keep species from other climate regions alive.
