Rock Creek Woods Historic District, Historic district in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States.
Rock Creek Woods Historic District is a residential area with 74 contemporary houses spread across about 28 acres in a wooded valley between two creeks near Connecticut Avenue. The homes were built between 1958 and 1961 by developers Herschel and Marvin Blumberg and follow modern architectural principles.
The district emerged in the late 1950s as a planned modern residential development, with all homes designed by architect Charles Goodman. This development created a coherent architectural project set within Maryland's wooded landscape.
During the 1960s, the neighborhood became a center for Jewish residents and people actively engaged in progressive causes. This identity shaped the community's character in lasting ways.
The area is easy to visit and retains its original street layout, unchanged lot divisions, and sidewalks that reflect the original plan. Walking through the streets allows visitors to experience the mid-century planning and consistent residential design.
All homes were designed by the same architect, Charles Goodman, creating a rare unity of contemporary residential architecture from the postwar era. This unified design makes it a remarkable example of cohesive modern planning that is rarely seen today.
