Wheaton Regional Park, Regional park in Wheaton, United States.
Wheaton Regional Park is a protected area in Montgomery County, Maryland, with athletic fields, tennis courts, an ice arena, and picnic shelters spread across its grounds. Forested sections cross through the park and are linked by a network of hiking trails that connect the different facilities.
The park was established in 1960 by bringing together several land parcels under a single protected area. The Harper Family Log House, a restored wooden cabin from the 1870s, was moved here in 1976 to keep early settlement history visible to visitors.
The Brookside Gardens section displays plant collections focused on native species and hosts programs tied to the seasons. Visitors can see how gardening traditions connect with the surrounding woodland in a very direct way.
The park is open from sunrise to sunset and has several picnic shelters that can be reserved in advance. Booking ahead is a good idea on weekends and in the warmer months, as the facilities tend to fill up quickly.
A restored 1915 carousel that once stood on the National Mall in Washington still runs here and gives visitors a direct connection to a lost piece of the capital's past. A miniature train with a replica of an 1863 locomotive travels through the woodland paths and offers a view of the park from an unusual angle.
