Chelsea Market, Indoor food hall and shopping center in Manhattan, United States
Chelsea Market is an indoor food and shopping area in Manhattan occupying an entire city block with more than 35 vendors offering food, crafts, and specialty items. Wide corridors connect different halls where butchers, fishmongers, bakeries, and restaurants with open kitchens line up side by side.
The building was erected in 1890 as the National Biscuit Company factory and became the birthplace of the Oreo cookie. In the 1990s, architects transformed the disused industrial complex into a marketplace while preserving the original steel beams and machinery.
Local bakers and cooks work behind open counters preparing fresh dishes that range from Italian pasta to Korean snacks. The high windows let natural light fall on exposed brick walls while historical photographs of former factory workers hang along the corridors.
The entrance sits on Ninth Avenue between 15th and 16th Street, with direct access to the High Line through the northern exit. Visitors find restrooms on the lower floor and several seating areas along the main corridors.
Below the main halls sit television studios where Food Network regularly records shows. Visitors can sometimes glimpse filming through glass windows when cameras are running.
