Galloo Island Light
Galloo Island Light, Historic lighthouse on Galloo Island, Lake Ontario, US.
Galloo Island Light is a stone lighthouse standing in Lake Ontario near Hounsfield, with a distinctive polygonal lantern crowning its tower. The beacon produces a fixed white light and operates a steam whistle to warn ships during foggy weather.
The lighthouse was constructed in 1820 as the first navigational aid built on Lake Ontario to protect ships entering eastern waters. This early establishment set the foundation for maritime safety along the lake's shipping routes.
The keeper's residence and assistant quarters once supported a small community on the island, where occupants grew their own food and maintained the grounds together. This self-sufficient way of life shaped how people worked and lived in isolation from the mainland.
The lighthouse sits on private property about 10 kilometers from the mainland and is accessible only in calm water conditions. Visitors should check weather forecasts and confirm access permissions before planning a trip to the island.
Despite sitting on private land, the Coast Guard maintains access through special easement rights to continue operating and maintaining the light. This unusual arrangement reflects the balance between private ownership and public maritime safety needs.
