Harrison County Courthouse

The Harrison County Courthouse is a substantial public building in Cadiz featuring thick stone walls, arched windows, and a prominent clock tower topped with a statue of Justice. The structure occupies a central location at Market Street and dominates the surrounding area visually.

Construction took place from 1893 to 1895 under architect Joseph W. Yost, who applied the Second Empire style of the era. The building became the county's administrative center upon completion and has maintained that role since.

The square surrounding the building serves as a gathering place where residents encounter one another and local events unfold. People use this public space as a natural hub for community interaction and administrative affairs.

The building stands at 100 West Market Street and is easy to locate and access. Extensive renovation work completed in 1993 included elevator installation and dome repairs, ensuring full accessibility for all visitors.

A mechanic's lien filed by the Greer family created an unexpected complication when the property first changed hands. This legal obstacle temporarily prevented county officials from taking occupancy of the newly completed building.
