Highbanks Metropolitan Park Mounds I and II

The Highbanks Metropolitan Park contains two subconical mounds situated on the east bank of the Olentangy River, spanning 175 acres of protected land.

The Adena culture constructed these earthen mounds between 800 and 1300 CE, as documented by researchers Squier and Davis in their 1848 publication.

The two mounds demonstrate the architectural capabilities and ceremonial practices of Indigenous peoples who lived in Ohio before European settlement.

Visitors can access both archaeological sites within Highbanks Metro Park, which features interpretive signs explaining the significance of these ancient structures.

The mounds remain largely undisturbed since their discovery, with a 1951 excavation revealing pottery fragments and flint tools beneath their surfaces.
