Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, Zoo and aquarium in Powell, Ohio
The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is a large zoological facility in the state of Ohio, home to more than 7,000 animals from 800 species across 234 hectares divided into geographic regions and habitats. The grounds include African savannas, Asian forests, and a coastal area with marine life, each connected by walking paths and viewing platforms.
The facility opened in 1927 with a small collection of animals and grew over the decades into one of the leading zoos in North America. Over time, the grounds expanded considerably, and new programs focused on conservation science for threatened species were added.
The facility takes its name from explorer Christopher Columbus, whose connection to the New World echoes through the animal habitats visitors encounter today. Families use the grounds as a place where children meet gorillas, polar bears, or tropical fish for the first time and grow excited about protecting these species.
The zoo opens daily at 9 in the morning and closes in the afternoon, with times varying by season and staying open longer during summer. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and plan enough time to explore all areas, as paths cover the wide grounds.
The Manatee Coast area serves as a rehabilitation center for injured manatees that later return to Florida waters. These animals receive medical care and support here before being released back into the wild.
