Horseshoe Lake

Horseshoe Lake is a shallow oxbow lake spanning about 2,400 acres with a shoreline of roughly 32 kilometers. The water body maintains an average depth of about 1.2 meters with deeper sections reaching around 1.8 meters.

The lake formed as a leftover bend from the Mississippi River and gained National Natural Landmark status from the National Park Service in 1972. This recognition highlighted its importance as a geological and ecological feature in the region.

The lake serves as a gathering place for anglers and boaters who enjoy its quiet waters year-round. The surrounding parkland draws bird watchers and nature enthusiasts who come to observe local wildlife in its natural setting.

Groups of around 25 people or larger should register at the park office to avoid overcrowding and scheduling issues. Arriving early or visiting during quieter times of day helps ensure a more peaceful experience.

The lake hosts the northernmost populations of bald cypress and tupelo trees, creating an ecosystem similar to southern wetlands. This unusual geographic reach allows visitors to experience subtropical plant life in an unexpected climate zone.
