Horseshoe Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area

Horseshoe Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area is a protected site centered on an oxbow lake surrounded by forested wetlands dominated by cypress and tupelo species. The preserve includes open water, marshland, and wooded sections that span across thousands of acres.

The state purchased the property in 1927 to establish a refuge for wild geese, and constructed a concrete spillway in 1930. The project emerged from early conservation efforts aimed at protecting regional bird populations.

The area serves as a vital observation point for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts drawn to witness migratory waterfowl throughout the seasons. The reed marshes and open water attract thousands of ducks, geese, and raptors year-round.

The site is accessible during daylight hours and supports fishing, hunting, bird watching, and camping activities. Visitors should wear appropriate footwear and prepare for wet conditions, especially in the marsh areas.

The site hosts some of the northernmost bald cypress trees in North America, creating an ecosystem resembling southern swamps. These trees mark an unexpected range boundary for a species typically found in tropical climates.
