James S. Lakin House
James S. Lakin House, Colonial Revival residence in Terra Alta, West Virginia, United States.
The James S. Lakin House is a residence in Terra Alta, West Virginia with a T-shaped floor plan, four intersecting gables, and a full-width porch supported by Tuscan columns. The building preserves most of its original features despite the addition of a garage and updates to its mechanical systems.
The house was built in 1895 for James S. Lakin, a businessman involved in state government administration. The architecture of this period reflected growing prosperity and the rise of local enterprise in Appalachian communities.
The architecture reflects the shift from Queen Anne to Colonial Revival styles, showing how residential preferences changed in America at the end of the 19th century. The thoughtful design with its columns and gables was a sign of prosperity and refined taste in the community.
The house sits at the corner of South Main Street and Aurora Pike, making it easy to spot while exploring the town. Since it remains a private residence, viewing from the outside allows you to appreciate the architecture and grounds from different angles.
The property once featured a tennis court and a windmill that pumped water from a well, though neither exists today. Such amenities were uncommon in small Appalachian towns and demonstrated the elevated lifestyle enjoyed by the Lakin family.
