Johnson Camden McKinley House
Johnson Camden McKinley House, National Historic mansion in Wheeling, United States.
The Johnson Camden McKinley House is a sandstone building in Wheeling with two wings arranged in an L-shape and features a covered verandah with balustrade details. The structure includes a two-story entrance rotunda, a grand salon, an English library, and about thirty rooms spread across the property.
The house was built between 1914 and 1920 for coal industry magnate Johnson Camden McKinley and his wife Agra Bennett McKinley. The design came from architect Fred Dempwolf and the property received its National Register listing in 1983.
The house reflects how wealthy industrial families of the early 1900s organized their homes, with distinct areas for entertaining guests and conducting family life. The layout shows the social customs of the time, where different spaces served specific purposes for the family's public and private activities.
The property is located on Bethany Pike and sits on spacious grounds that allow for a full exploration of the home and its surroundings. Plan to spend enough time to see the various rooms and the outdoor areas at a leisurely pace.
The house was designed so that entertaining areas and private living spaces are completely separated within the same building. This layout allowed the family to host large gatherings without intruding on their personal quarters.
