Federal Building and United States Courthouse
Federal Building and United States Courthouse, Government building and courthouse in Wheeling, United States.
The Federal Building and United States Courthouse is a courthouse in Wheeling featuring granite walls and symmetrical facades in the Beaux-Arts style. Inside, terrazzo flooring and marble details are distributed throughout federal offices and courtrooms.
The building was constructed between 1905 and 1907 under the Tarsney Act to replace an outdated Custom House. Later additions in 1938 and 2004 expanded the structure to meet growing court operations needs.
The building shows classical features of the Beaux-Arts style with symmetrical facades and grand columns that convey strength and permanence. These design choices communicated that important legal and governmental work took place within.
The building is open to the public, but visitors should be aware this is an active courthouse with security screenings required. Check in advance which areas are accessible to visitors since some spaces may be restricted for operational reasons.
When it first opened, the building sat on the northern edge of the city, which initially drew criticism. Yet this seemingly remote location ultimately became a catalyst for urban growth, gradually drawing businesses and institutions northward.
