Chapline Street Row Historic District
Chapline Street Row Historic District, Historic district in Wheeling, West Virginia, United States.
Chapline Street Row Historic District comprises ten brick buildings with sandstone foundations along 2301-2323 Chapline Street, housing eight Victorian residences. The structures display craft details from different construction phases and demonstrate building techniques from the late 1800s.
Construction of the district began in 1853 and extended through the 1870s, with the final building completed in 1896 by architect E.W. Wells. This span shows how the neighborhood gradually grew and transformed into a prosperous residential area.
The residences showcase late Victorian design preferences and tell the story of how this part of the city developed during the 1800s. The matching facades reflect the wealth and taste of the people who lived here.
The district is easily accessible on foot and invites walking to view the architectural details. The best time to visit is during daylight when the brick patterns and sandstone foundations are clearly visible.
This collection of buildings represents the most substantial block of Victorian architecture found anywhere in West Virginia. The concentration of these structures in one location makes this street row a remarkable record of how an entire era built.
