Aetnaville Bridge, Road bridge in Bridgeport, US
The Aetnaville Bridge is a road bridge spanning the west channel of the Ohio River between Bridgeport, Ohio and Wheeling Island. It features pin-connected Pennsylvania through trusses and sandstone piers.
The Wrought Iron Bridge Company of Canton built the structure in 1891, initially serving both vehicles and streetcars. Streetcar service ended in 1937, though vehicle traffic continued for decades afterward.
The bridge stands as part of the Wheeling Island Historic District, recognized for its role in the region's industrial development. Visitors can see the structure as a symbol of the transportation infrastructure that shaped the local economy.
Originally open to vehicles, the bridge closed to car traffic in 1988 due to structural concerns. After that point it remained accessible to pedestrians until access was discontinued in 2016.
A notable modification occurred in 1969 when three western trusses were removed and rebuilt using steel girders. These changes were required to accommodate the completion of the Ohio Route 7 freeway.
