Mount de Chantal Visitation Academy, Catholic girls' school in Wheeling, United States
Mount de Chantal Visitation Academy was a Catholic girls' school in Wheeling featuring Victorian architecture built from brick on a limestone foundation. The building included a prominent section dedicated to fine arts instruction.
The institution was established in 1848 when a bishop invited eight teaching sisters from Baltimore to open a girls' school in Wheeling. The school operated for over 150 years before closing in 2008.
The school served as a central place for girls' education in Wheeling and offered strong fine arts programs alongside academic instruction. Its role in shaping local educational opportunities for female students remained significant throughout its history.
The former school site was purchased by Wheeling Hospital in 2011 and was subsequently demolished to make way for new uses. The location now serves as practice fields used by local Catholic schools.
Two First Ladies of West Virginia, Carrie Watson Fleming and Edna Hall Scott Kump, were educated at this academy. Their education there connected them to one of the state's most prominent institutions for girls.
