Mianus River Bridge, Steel bridge on Interstate 95 in Cos Cob, United States.
The Mianus River Bridge carries Interstate 95 traffic over the waterway between Cos Cob and Riverside in Greenwich. The multi-lane steel structure sits roughly 30 feet above the water and extends in a straight line across both banks of the river.
The original crossing from 1958 collapsed partially in 1983, prompting Connecticut to build a new design using continuous girders without movable joints. State Senator Michael L. Morano advocated for bridge safety reforms after the collapse, which led to the replacement structure bearing his name.
The bridge received its current name, Michael L. Morano Bridge, in recognition of the state senator who represented Greenwich and supported transportation improvements.
Travelers cross the structure on Interstate 95 in both directions between New York City and Boston. The roadway offers open views of the river and the wooded shoreline during the crossing.
The design now uses a system of continuous steel beams that prevents a single component failure from causing collapse. Each main span is supported by multiple redundant elements, allowing the crossing to remain functional even with partial damage.
