Cos Cob Power Station, Electric power station in Cos Cob, Connecticut, US.
Cos Cob Power Station is an electric generation facility in Spanish Revival style located near Metro-North Railroad tracks, the Mianus River, and Sound Shore Drive in Greenwich, Connecticut. The building was designed to supply electrical power to multiple railroad operations across the region.
Built between 1905 and 1907, it was the first power plant in the United States designed specifically to supply mainline railroad operations with electricity. The facility served multiple railroad companies for nearly 80 years.
The name comes from the Coe family, who built a protective wall in this area during the 1600s. This local history remains visible in how the neighborhood identifies itself.
The site sits at an important junction with access from the river and rail lines in the area. Visitors should be aware that the location remains near active railroad infrastructure and should respect related safety guidelines.
The facility was a pioneer in alternating current electrification, allowing trains to switch between different electrical systems on the same tracks. This technical solution was revolutionary for railroad operations at the time.
