Moose River Plains Wild Forest, Wild forest in Adirondack Park, United States
Moose River Plains Wild Forest is a large forest area in Hamilton and Herkimer counties featuring numerous lakes, streams, and trails through forested and open terrain. The landscape includes ridge lines, waterways, and diverse habitats that shape the hiking experience throughout the property.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation established this area as a protected forest region within the larger Adirondack Forest Preserve system. This designation was part of broader conservation efforts to maintain the wilderness character of the region.
The annual Black Fly Challenge bicycle race takes place on the Limekiln Lake-Cedar River Road through the forest each June, drawing participants from across the region.
You can enter through two main gates: Limekiln Gate near Inlet and Cedar River Gate near Indian Lake, with primitive camping sites spread throughout the area. Both entrances provide good starting points for exploring trails and navigating the forest interior.
The forest contains an extensive network of unpaved roads spanning about 23 miles, making it the largest motor vehicle accessible remote area in the Adirondacks. This combination of motorized access with wilderness terrain sets it apart from other protected forests in the region.
