Founded in 1965 as the Oyster Museum and opened in 1972, this institution transformed from focusing solely on seafood industry to covering the complete island heritage.
The museum collection includes traditional decoy carvings, oyster industry tools, and maritime equipment that represent the activities of local watermen across different periods.
Located at 7125 Maddox Boulevard, the museum welcomes visitors on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 AM to 4 PM, with guided tours available upon request.
The museum houses the original First Order Fresnel Lens from 1866, manufactured in Paris and formerly used in the Assateague Lighthouse.
