The 14,000-acre sanctuary spans beach, dunes, marsh, and maritime forest habitats across Assateague Island, Morris Island, and Wildcat Marsh.
The refuge began in 1943 when the Fields family sold their property to the federal government for wildlife conservation and environmental protection.
During July, the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company conducts the annual Pony Penning, where wild ponies swim between Assateague and Chincoteague islands.
The Herbert H. Bateman Educational Center provides visitor passes, maps, and information through staff members in a building powered by geothermal and solar energy.
The refuge maintains specialized moist soil management units that support thousands of waterfowl, shorebirds, and coastal birds during their migration periods.
