Northville Historic District

Northville Historic District is a community area featuring buildings that span several centuries, with brick-paved streets, traditional streetlamps, and tree-lined walkways throughout. The buildings range from modest homes to larger commercial structures with varied facade styles.

The district received recognition as a Michigan State Historic Site in 1970 and was added to the National Register two years later, with 73 buildings documented as significant. These official designations helped protect the structures from demolition and ensured their long-term preservation.

The district reflects different architectural movements that shaped it over time, from Greek Revival simplicity to ornate Victorian details that decorate many facades. Walking through the streets, visitors notice how these varied styles stand alongside each other, showing how taste and building practices changed across generations.

The district is best explored on foot since it features sidewalks and pedestrian-friendly streets throughout. Visitors can drive to the area and find parking near main attractions like Mill Race Village.

Within the district sits Mill Race Village, a collection of buildings gathered from across the region, including an inn from 1835. That building served as a safe haven for people seeking freedom during the era of illegal enslavement.
