Nymph and Fawn, Bronze fountain in Oldfields, Indianapolis, US
Nymph and Fawn is a bronze fountain featuring a female figure holding an urn with water flowing over a young deer on a limestone base. The work sits beside a pond within the gardens of the Oldfields estate.
Austrian-American sculptor Isidore Konti created the work in 1917 during his time working in Indianapolis. The piece later entered the collection of the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
The sculpture brings together classical symbolism with naturalistic elements that reflected American garden art of the early 1900s. Visitors can see how mythological figures were placed into peaceful natural settings.
The fountain is located in the gardens of Oldfields house and is accessible during visits to the estate. The best time to view it is during daylight hours when light catches the bronze surface and highlights its details.
The work breaks from classical iconography by pairing a nymph with a young deer rather than a satyr. This unexpected substitution gives the composition a softer, less mythological quality.
