The Indianapolis Museum of Art is an art museum and cultural park in Indianapolis, United States, housing more than 54,000 artworks from African, American, Asian, and European collections. The grounds cover 152 acres (62 hectares) and include exhibition spaces, gardens, forested trails, and wetlands with contemporary art installations.
The institution began in 1883 as the Art Association of Indianapolis and moved to its current site in 1970. The museum expanded its collections over the following decades and added gardens and a sculpture park.
Visitors walk through galleries displaying works from several millennia, including paintings, sculptures, and ceramics from Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. The collection now operates under the name Newfields, combining art exhibitions with gardens and outdoor installations.
The museum offers free parking in the main lot and underground garage, with wheelchairs and rolling walkers available at the ground floor reception desk. The outdoor trails in the park suit walking and lead through forests, fields, and wetlands with artworks along the route.
The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park covers 100 acres (40 hectares) and combines contemporary art installations with walking trails through forests and wetlands. Artists from several countries created site-specific works that change with the seasons and the natural environment.
