Four Seasons, Stone putti sculpture at Indianapolis Museum of Art, US
Four Seasons is a group of four stone putti figures located near the Indianapolis Museum of Art, each elevated on its own rectangular base. The sculptures display distinctive seasonal qualities through the objects and elements they hold or are surrounded by.
These figures originated as Italian creations and were later integrated into the Four Seasons Garden design of 1939. They complemented the Recreation Building, which was added to the Oldfields estate in 1940.
Each figure represents seasonal traditions: Spring with flower baskets, Summer with wheat, Autumn with fruits and wine, Winter without vegetation.
These works are carefully maintained through regular conservation by the Indianapolis Museum of Art, especially following their reinstallation in 2011. Visitors can view the sculptures in excellent condition and examine their fine details from various angles.
The undersides of each base carry the carved mark 'ITALY', confirming the sculptures' Italian origin. Yet the creator's identity remains unknown, adding an air of mystery to these carefully crafted figures.
