Team Building, Installation artwork at Indianapolis Museum of Art, United States
Team Building is an aluminum sculpture consisting of two large suspended rings positioned side by side on the exterior of the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Each ring measures approximately 30 feet across and is constructed from thick-walled aluminum tubing, creating a geometric composition that rises prominently from the ground.
This sculptural work was created in 2010 when the museum commissioned a new piece for the opening of its 100 Acres Park sculpture garden. The Type A collective designed the installation specifically for this outdoor location and its landscape setting.
The work references corporate team building exercises, particularly the Bull Ring Initiative where groups apply tension to connected cords to work together. This concept translates the idea of collaboration into a visual form that visitors can observe and understand from their position on the ground.
The best vantage point for viewing is directly in front of the museum building, where you can see the entire form from multiple angles. The site remains accessible throughout the day in various lighting conditions, allowing visitors to experience how the shadows and proportions change.
The rings are positioned so their shadows converge precisely at noon during the summer solstice, an effect achieved through consultation with an astronomy professor. This moment ties the physical structure to the sun's path and creates a natural phenomenon that visitors can witness at the right time of year.
