Bench Around the Lake, Interactive sculpture at Indianapolis Museum of Art, United States
Bench Around the Lake comprises fifteen yellow metal benches in varied shapes and designs forming a continuous line that weaves along park paths and lakeshores. Each bench is constructed from hot-dip galvanized steel, creating a flowing sculptural presence across the landscape.
Danish artist Jeppe Hein created this galvanized steel installation in 2010, and it entered the museum's permanent collection in 2014. This acquisition confirmed its role as an enduring addition to the institution's holdings.
The installation reshapes how park benches function by inviting visitors to explore quieter corners and meet other museum guests along the way. This creates a conversation between art and everyday use in nature.
The entire bench installation is wheelchair accessible across the 35-acre park grounds, with regular surface maintenance ensuring safe passage. Visitors can explore at their own pace and pause at various points throughout the landscape.
The benches were manufactured in Germany before arriving in Indianapolis, where landscape architect Eric Fulford helped determine their exact placement throughout the park. This international collaboration in site planning shaped how the work sits within the environment.
