Crown Hill Cemetery, Historic cemetery in Indianapolis, United States.
Crown Hill Cemetery is a large burial ground in Indianapolis, United States, covering 555 acres (224 hectares) of gently rolling hills, winding roads, and dense tree cover. The grounds hold numerous mausoleums, family plots, and monuments in different architectural styles.
The cemetery opened in 1863 when local businessmen sought a new burial space beyond smaller grounds. Over the decades it became the final resting place for prominent political and cultural figures, including President Benjamin Harrison and several Indiana governors.
Local residents often visit the grounds for quiet walks among the trees, treating the space as both a memorial and a park. Many monuments feature elaborate carvings and inscriptions that reflect the importance of those buried here.
Access is through the North Gate at 38th Street and Clarendon Road or the South Gothic Gate at 34th Street and Boulevard Place. The paved roads make it easy to navigate by car or on foot, while signage helps with orientation.
A separate 1.4-acre (0.6-hectare) section holds 795 Union soldiers from the Civil War arranged in military formation. The highest point in the cemetery offers wide views over the city of Indianapolis.
