Free Basket, Steel sculpture at Indianapolis Museum of Art, US
Free Basket is an outdoor steel sculpture made of 24 red and blue arches arranged to form a functional basketball court. The artwork has regulation hoops at both ends and visitors can walk through and play on it.
The work was created in 2010 by Los Carpinteros, a Cuban artist collective, and installed as part of the museum's outdoor collection. It represents a collaboration between international artists and the local art institution.
The sculpture links art and sports in a way that reflects how basketball is woven into Indianapolis's daily life. Visitors can actually play here while experiencing the artistic design around them.
The sculpture is located on public grounds and is freely accessible around the clock for visitors who want to play or walk through. Wear comfortable shoes since you will be walking and moving on the steel structure.
The steel arches are designed to trace the mathematical paths that a bouncing basketball follows through the air. This blend of physics and artistic design gives the piece a hidden layer that players discover naturally.
