Wheeler-Stokely Mansion
Wheeler-Stokely Mansion, Arts and Crafts mansion in Indianapolis, United States.
The Wheeler-Stokely Mansion is an Arts and Crafts residence in Indianapolis with buff brick walls, ceramic tile bands, and a green terra cotta roof. The building sits on landscaped grounds with a lengthy colonnade extending from its rear.
Frank Wheeler, co-founder of Indianapolis Motor Speedway, commissioned this residence in 1911. The property changed ownership to William Stokely in 1937 before eventually becoming part of Marian University.
The mansion displays Arts and Crafts design principles through its ceramic detailing and handcrafted elements that define its character. These architectural choices reflect the movement's emphasis on quality workmanship and natural materials.
The grounds now belong to Marian University and require permission before visiting. It is best to contact the university in advance to arrange access to the property.
The property includes a square gazebo with Mercer tile that once served as a boarding point for gondola rides on an artificial lagoon. This rare feature reveals how wealthy residents enjoyed water-based leisure during the early 1900s.
