Henry F. Campbell Mansion
Henry F. Campbell Mansion, Italian Renaissance mansion on Cold Spring Road, Indianapolis, United States.
The Henry F. Campbell Mansion is an Italian Renaissance estate with cream-colored brick facades, terra cotta details, and a green terra cotta tile hipped roof. The grounds also contain several support buildings including a gardener's house, a six-car garage, a barn, and a garden shed for maintaining the property.
The estate was constructed between 1916 and 1922 by architects D.A. Bohlen and Son during a period of growth for Indianapolis. It received its National Register of Historic Places designation in 1997 and has since been recognized as a protected historic structure.
The residence reflects the preferences of wealthy Indianapolis residents who admired Italian Renaissance architecture and favored grand entry features with classical columns. These design choices reveal the ideals and values that the upper class sought to display during the early 1900s.
The property spreads across about 5.7 acres of landscaped grounds, allowing ample time for exploring during a visit. Visiting and viewing the grounds typically require prior arrangement since the area functions as a residential complex.
The estate was later converted into Estates Apartments, creating an interesting link between its past as a private residence and its present function as a residential complex. This adaptive reuse allowed the original architecture to be preserved while providing housing for modern residents.
