Indianapolis Masonic Temple
Indianapolis Masonic Temple, Masonic temple in Indianapolis, United States
The Indianapolis Masonic Temple is an eight-story Classical Revival building made from Indiana limestone with rows of Ionic columns across its facade. Inside, it features an auditorium, a dining hall with catering kitchen, a ballroom, and museum spaces.
The building opened in May 1909 and replaced two previous Masonic structures that had stood on the same site. One of those earlier buildings was where Abraham Lincoln gave a speech in 1859.
The building contains seven separate pipe organs and multiple lodge rooms that serve as spaces for members to gather and conduct their traditions. These rooms reflect how the organization uses the building to bring people together for meaningful gatherings.
The building is located downtown at 525 N. Illinois Street and is easily accessible on foot. Visitors should know it functions as an active gathering space, so some areas may be accessible or restricted depending on scheduled events and private meetings.
During 1919, the building experienced exceptional activity, hosting over 1,000 meetings and serving meals to tens of thousands of people. This shows how vital it was as a community gathering place for the city.
