The Cathcart

The Cathcart is a historic apartment building at 103 East 9th Street featuring deep red brick walls and grey limestone details that reflect early twentieth-century residential design. The structure displays multiple floors with regular window patterns and architectural features typical of residential buildings from that period.

The building was constructed in 1909 during a period when Indianapolis was experiencing a surge in apartment building construction. It replaced an earlier house that the Cathcarts had received as a wedding gift in 1870.

The building represents an apartment type common in the East that shaped how Indianapolis neighborhoods developed in the early 1900s. Walking past it, you can see how this design influenced residential living patterns in the city.

Alice Cathcart had the building constructed despite warnings from financial advisors who cautioned against the project. It stands as an early example of a woman independently leading a major real estate development.
